Directions

The top map shows how to get to Chewton and Castlemaine by road from Melbourne (and the airport), and from Bendigo, Ballarat, and several other towns. The lower Chewton map shows how to get to Amber Cottage once you are in Chewton. Both maps can be opened as a PDF file and printed.

  • Chewton is a 6-minute drive from Castlemaine.
  • From Melbourne the quickest route is the Calder Freeway.
  • Exit at Elphinstone and follow the signs to Castlemaine. The road winds through bush and is a particularly pretty drive.
  • Look for the road to Fryerstown (Fryers Road) on the left just before the Chewton oval. (See the lower map.)
  • Go along Fryers Road for 1km (under the railway bridge, past Dinah Road and Albert Street). Turn left into Prior Street opposite the sign for Wattle Gully Mine.
  • You can download both maps as PDF files which you can print.
  • Both PDF files include directions from Melbourne.

An excellent train service operates from Southern Cross Station in Melbourne (the Melbourne-Bendigo line, stopping at Castlemaine). See V/Line for the timetable.

You need Adobe Reader to access the PDF files of the maps. If you don't have Adobe Reader download it here.
